Scotland Should Try to Attract Hong Kongers Fleeing Chinese Occupation

The UK government has done the right thing in extending the immigration to offer to Hong Kongers. But the government have done little to pro-actively attract emigrees from Hong Kong. This represents a huge opportunity for Scotland to instead attract some of the most talented and capable Hong Kongers who otherwise might have chosen to relocate to London, or elsewhere in the south of England.

Scotland’s Shuttered Town Centres Need More Powers

Perhaps one of the most immediately visible effects of the last two years has been on Scotland’s town centres. A walk through any high street paints a depressing picture. Once bustling streets are often deserted. Family-owned independent businesses have been replaced by charity shops and nail salons. Many more lie empty, their boarded windows a crude symbol of decay.

COP shows Scotland can host the World Cup

The World Cup: a tournament that the UK and Ireland should host in 2030. From the UK government’s perspective, it would be an opportunity to reaffirm the deep cultural bonds that exist across the UK. It would also show the UK delivering for Scotland, much more than any technocratic policy announcement ever could.

Reflecting on COP26: Hope and Fear – the view from the street

Two weeks ago, ‘the most important climate conference of our generation’ ended in tears, quite literally for Alok Sharma. Many have said ‘The Glasgow Climate Pact’ is a disappointment, but that would imply I expected anything better. Boris Johnson warned we were at ‘one minute to midnight’ as COP opened. Today it’s fair to say we’re well into the early morning.
